Undeliverable Email

It is the responsibility of the owner to keep account mailing information current. If a water bill is not received because it went to an invalid address, DWSD will not accept that as a valid reason for non-payment. As part of DWSD’s continuing efforts to keep water rates low, the department is now posting a list of accounts with balances owing that were sent to undeliverable addresses (mail returned by the U. S. Postal Service). Click here to see the latest list.

Please be advised that any outstanding balances on accounts may be referred to a collection agency for further action. Additionally, this debt may be reported to the credit bureaus, which could have a negative impact on your credit rating. These bills are a lien against the property served.

In order to prevent further collection action, please contact DWSD at 313-267-8000 between the hours of 8:30am and 5pm Monday-Friday(EST) and provide an updated mailing address. Customers may pay any outstanding balances online at the website or by visiting any DWSD Customer Service Center.

Tax Lien

Detroit water and sewer customers with a past due balance must pay their water and sewer bill, otherwise state law permits DWSD to place the amount of any unpaid water and sewer bill on the City of Detroit Property Tax Roll as a lien for collection purposes.

DWSD has several payment plan options available to assist customers. Please call 313-267-8000 or visit one of our offices. Customers who are able to pay the past due balance in full within ten days of receipt of individual notification may do so online.

If you are planning to be out of town for a long period of time, please contact DWSD at (313) 267-8000, and give your name, current address, phone number, and account number. Then, be sure to leave a forwarding address and specify the period that you will be out of town. That will help DWSD and the U.S. Postal Service forward your bills to the correct address and help avoid any unnecessary water service shutoffs and fees. Currently, DWSD will shut off water service if the account is 45 days past due.

DWSD Electronic Check

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) is pleased to announce that customers may now pay account balances by using Automated Clearing House (ACH) electronic check transfers. For more information, customers should access their accounts online, or call Customer Service at (313) 267-8000.
