DWSD Encourages Residents to Clear Catch Basins to Prevent Flooding During Heavy Rains

When it rains, it pours into the Detroit Water and Sewage System’s (DWSD) catch basins. Catch basins, or sewers, are located in front of homes throughout the City and function primarily as a draining mechanism during heavy rain and storms to allow rainwater to flow off the City’s streets and sidewalks.

However, when the catch basins are not clear of leaves and other debris, the catch basins back up and flood into the neighborhoods and into basements. In order to prevent flooding, DWSD recommends that neighbors lend a helping hand and keep catch basins clear so that the rain can travel to the wastewater plant and be treated before it is released into the Detroit River.

“A small step such as clearing the catch basin on a regular basis really helps to protect our sewer system and also can prevent flood damage to homes,” said Gary Brown, Director of DWSD. “The combination of a heavy rain and the fall leaves can often block the sewer. It only takes a few seconds to help our system do what it is designed to do and help out your neighbors as well. We view this as a shared responsibility of neighbors, block clubs and everybody on the block, to clear storm drains of debris.”

The City of Detroit has more than 95,000 catch basins. Residents that experience flooding should call DWSD at (313) 267-7401.
